Decibel Adventures- Habitat Builds in Guatemala
Posted by Jenna Levy on 3rd Aug 2016
Decibel is passionate about building, no bones about it. While our forte is furniture to grace your already beautiful homes, the art and science of craftsmanship was certainly true for your homes as well. And while we didn't contribute to the building of your homes, one of our team members was recently able to participate in a Habitat for Humanity build in Antigua, Guatemala.
The experience was everything you may expect, and then some. Cultural immersion, perspective, lifelong friendships and respect for the hard work that goes into the building of a home. No job was too small, no person unwilling to help. Only good vibes allowed on these sites.
The group worked on two homes-- one for a family of six, and one for a family of eight. Habitat offers prospective families ten different plans to choose from, so the style of the two homes was slightly different. Regardless, the focus of the week was on digging trenches, constructing rebar, and pouring concrete for the foundation. This will be the only Habitat group that will have worked on either property, the remainder of the work will be completed by local masons and their assistants, contracted by Habitat for Humanity. In total, these homes will only take 4-6 weeks to construct, largely in part to the talent and the focus of all who participate.
Here are just a few photos of the builds, and the beauty of Guatemala.
The verdict? More of these trips on future years' calendars.
